Emily Curtis Walters: Storyteller and PhD Candidate in History

Emily Curtis Walters was not always passionate about history. She did, however, love hearing stories from the past. As a child, she spent many hours at her grandmother’s house that was filled with memorabilia. “I loved going through all of her stuff and fishing out the things that interested me,” Emily remembers. “My grandmother would tell me the story of each item, who it belonged to, and how it pertained to her life. I didn’t understand how that was history at the time.”

The Flame Challenge is an international science communication competition where scientists are challenged to explain a scientific concept to 11-year-old children around the world. This year’s question is “What is Sound?” Entries can be in written or visual form and will be judged by thousands of 5ht and 6th grade students from around the world. One winner will be chosen for visual form and one will be chosen for written form. Winners receive a trip to NYC to meet Alan Alda, a $1000 prize and will be honored at the World Science Festival in early June. The deadline for submissions is January 19.
