Fall Message to Directors of Graduate Study

Modified: September 12, 2017

Dear Directors of Graduate Study,

As the new Dean of The Graduate School (TGS) and Associate Provost for Graduate Education, I wanted to take the opportunity to greet you, and thank you in advance for the work you will do on behalf of the graduate population this academic year. The success of our community depends primarily on the combined creativity, insights and hard work of our students and faculty. All of this work is enabled by TGS partnering with each Director of Graduate Study. I’m excited to meet and get to know you and the programs you lead.

One important vehicle for continual coordination and improvement of our graduate programs is the quarterly DGS meeting. It is at these meetings that we can collectively integrate best practices with best ideas and raise topics on which we can work to make graduate education at Northwestern as strong as possible. Please mark your calendars for October 19, 2017 at 3 PM in TGS Commons for our first meeting.

We have recently fielded several questions regarding DACA/undocumented students. I refer everyone in our community to the strong letter of student support from President Schapiro. TGS will continue its practice of ensuring advanced educational opportunities and a supportive work environment for all of our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

We are rolling out enhanced social media activities to support you, your program and students. Keep us up to date on student activities that can be highlighted in The Wire and other outlets by emailing Josie Clark, TGS's Director of Communications and Outreach.

TGS is always here to support you. I encourage you to engage with us, and especially to contact Angela G. Ray, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, with your thoughts, ideas, and feedback as we work together to serve our community of scholars.

I wish you a strong start to this academic year.

My best!
