Health Policy Research Scholars Application Opens January 12

Modified: January 4, 2018

Health Policy Research Scholars is looking for second-year, full-time doctoral students from any and all disciplines—as diverse as economics, political science, psychology, architecture, transportation, sociology, and environmental health—who want to apply a health policy lens to their research to advance health and equity in their communities.

Applications for Health Policy Research Scholars open January 12, 2018.

As you get started on your application, here are answers to some of the questions applicants most frequently ask:

Q: If I am currently in my second year of a doctoral program am I eligible?
A: Only doctoral students entering the second year of their program in fall 2018 are eligible.

Q: What does “underrepresented” mean?
A: It means students from underrepresented populations and/or disadvantaged backgrounds—students whose ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ability, and other factors allow them to bring unique and diverse perspectives to their research. We encourage those who feel this describes their situation to apply and explain why they feel they are eligible.

Q: Can policy and public health students apply?
A: Yes, but note that this program is designed for students who do not have a policy or public health background; some of the HPRS training and activities will be redundant with activities in your doctoral program. They also may limit the number of public health and policy students accepted into each cohort.

Q: How much time will the program require each month?
A: If you’re selected, you can expect to spend about 3–4 hours per week on program activities during the online courses. The program also includes in-person meetings that may range from a few days during the school year to 2–3 weeks during the summers. To support this time commitment, HPRS provides each scholar financial support of $30,000 per year.
