External Fellowships

The Graduate School (TGS) strongly encourages students to apply for external fellowships and grants. For information on external awards and the services available to students interested in applying for outside funds, please visit the Office of Fellowships web page.

Office of Fellowships

Fellowships fall into many categories. Some provide funding to attend graduate school while others allow you to study or to conduct research overseas to gain practical experience in your field of study. The Office of Fellowships assists students and alumni to expand and deepen their intellectual pursuits and commitment to global service. Students are encouraged to contact the Office of Fellowships for assistance in securing outside funds.

The Office of Fellowships maintains a website to serve graduate fellowship seekers and applicants. This site identifies external fellowships that students in each Northwestern graduate department have won in the past—those you may be best positioned to win.

The website also has listings for diversity-based fellowships, awards available to international students and links to selected national fellowships databases.

For more information about external fellowships, please contact Stephen Hill at the Office of Fellowships.

TGS External Award Policy

Students who are offered both a University Fellowship and an external award are expected to accept the outside support and should consult TGS before a decision is made. Please review the TGS External Award Policy for more information.

To request a supplement, the department chair, director of graduate studies or program designee must submit a copy of the external award notification detailing the amount and award period through our Special Funding Request Tool. Following a thorough review of the external award details, TGS will follow-up to confirm the amount and length of supplementation.
