HBCU Hangout

The HBCU Hangout is a social gathering designed specifically for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who attended historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). This event provides a unique opportunity for students and scholars to reconnect with their HBCU roots, share experiences, and celebrate the rich culture of HBCU communities. The HBCU Hangout offers a welcoming space to unwind, meet others with similar backgrounds, and forge meaningful connections.

At the heart of the HBCU Hangout is camaraderie fostered through food and games. With games like UNO and Spades, the event encourages friendly competition and lighthearted fun, helping students feel at ease.

This program is particularly vital for students who may experience a sense of culture shock when transitioning from an HBCU to a predominantly white graduate school. For many, the move can feel isolating, and the HBCU Hangout offers a supportive community where students can share common experiences. It creates a safe space to reflect on the value of HBCU education while navigating the complexities of graduate school life.

Ultimately, the HBCU Hangout allows attendees to celebrate their cultural heritage while finding support in a space that understands their unique journey. By connecting through food, games, and shared experiences, students can form a unique community in their pursuit of academic and personal success.

Attendees are also invited to continue their connection via an HBCU Hangout group forum. Please email ODI intern Spencer Nabors to be added to the forum. Please email TGSDiversity@northwestern.edu for more information.
