Fall Welcome Message from Dean Mayo

TGS is an incredibly diverse community, and I hope you will add your talents and voice to the ongoing intellectual dialogues and societal debates that take place in classrooms, labs, and studios across our campuses. ”

Kelly Mayo
Dean of The Graduate School and Associate Provost for Graduate Education

Dear members of The Graduate School (TGS) community,

As the weather hints at crisper days ahead, I would like to welcome you all to the start of another academic year and wish you the best this Fall Quarter. I would especially like to welcome those who are just joining TGS and hope your time at Northwestern is off to a good start. I have enjoyed meeting many of you at our orientation and welcome events.

The Graduate School prides itself on being a place where learning, discovery, and creativity flourish. We are pleased to count over 3,500 PhD students, 1,900 master’s students, and more than 1,000 postdocs within our graduate community. This includes a vibrant population of international students and postdocs, as well as those who are first-generation graduate students and postdocs and/or from underrepresented identities. We welcome a rich exchange of ideas and hold our shared humanity in high regard. Together as students, postdocs, faculty, and staff, we have the potential to broaden perspectives, drive discoveries, advance society, and help shape the vision and values of our institution.

TGS is an incredibly diverse community, and I hope you will add your talents and voice to the ongoing intellectual dialogues and societal debates that take place in classrooms, labs, and studios across our campuses. If you are new to Northwestern or looking for connections, I encourage you to explore the TGS-affiliated graduate student organizations and check out any remaining welcome events. Postdocs can visit the Northwestern University Postdoctoral Association (NUPA) website and join the NUPA Slack channel to stay up to date on programming and opportunities.

During the year ahead, TGS will host a variety of programming and engagement opportunities and cultural celebrations to help you grow in your professional development, acquire new skills and knowledge, create meaningful connections, and enjoy one another’s company. Please stay tuned to our weekly e-newsletters, TGS Wire for graduate students and OPA Wire for postdocs, to learn more. We are here to support you throughout your academic journey, and I hope you will reach out to me or any of our dedicated TGS staff members whenever we can be of assistance.

Thank you for being a part of the graduate community at Northwestern. I wish you much success this academic year and beyond.

Sincerely,
Kelly
