External Fellowships and Grants
The Graduate School (TGS) strongly encourages students to apply for external fellowships and grants.
Office of Fellowships
Fellowships fall into many categories. Some provide funding to attend graduate school while others support study or research overseas to gain practical experience in your field of study. Still others fund language study or trips to specialized archives. The Office of Fellowships assists students and alumni to identify appropriate fellowships, then successfully complete the application process. Students should contact the Office of Fellowships for assistance in securing outside funds.
The Office of Fellowships maintains a website to serve graduate fellowship seekers and applicants. This site identifies external databases that provide a host of options to graduate students.
In addition to discipline, the databases listed here allow students to search along a number of criteria including diversity-based fellowships, awards available to international students, and awards for multiple identity groups.
For more information about external fellowships contact the Office of Fellowships. Students in the humanities and social sciences please contact Stephen Hill. Students in STEM fields please contact LaTanya Williams.
Additional funding opportunities
There are other grants available for graduate students that are managed by Northwestern centers and institutes. We encourage you to visit the websites below to learn more about funding opportunities for graduate students.
- In partnership with The Graduate School, the Kaplan Institute offers Franke Graduate Fellowships for doctoral students in the humanities during their fourth or fifth year of study. Franke Graduate Fellows pursue independent research within a vibrant interdisciplinary collective, which includes multiplayer structured conversations among faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, internationally renowned visiting scholars, and distinguished visiting artists.
- The Global and Research Opportunities at Northwestern University website, administered by the Office of Provost and the Office of Undergraduate Research, is a searchable database that allows you to quickly identify opportunities for international travel, research experiences, fellowships, and more.
- The Sexualities Project at Northwestern (SPAN) supports research and education on life sciences, biomedical sciences, and social sciences in relation to the study of human sexual orientation and human sexuality. They offer research awards and funding opportunities to faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in these fields.
