The Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society commemorates the first African American to earn a doctorate degree from an American university (Physics, Yale University, 1876). The Bouchet Society seeks to develop a network of scholars who exemplify academic and personal excellence, foster environments of support, and serve as examples of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and advocacy—exemplifying the spirit and example of Dr. Bouchet.
The purpose of the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society is to recognize outstanding scholarly achievement and excellence in doctoral education and the professoriate.
The Northwestern University chapter of Bouchet scholars was established in 2017.
Eligibility Requirements
PhD students and postdoctoral scholars may nominate themselves, other PhD students or postdoctoral scholars, and must also be nominated by a faculty member.
The faculty member should be the PhD student's faculty adviser or someone on the student's dissertation committee, or a postdoc's principal investigator (PI) or someone from their hiring department who is closely familiar with their research.
Nominees must:
- Be a domestic PhD student or postdoctoral scholar
- Exhibit a strong commitment to character, leadership, advocacy, scholarship, and service within higher education, aligning with the five pillars of the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society

- Completed faculty nomination form*
- High-resolution headshot (JPEG or PNG format required, minimum resolution of 600x900 pixels)
*Important notice: The nomination form must be sent directly from the faculty members who are providing the student/postdoc nomination. The faculty member should be the student's faculty adviser or someone on the student's dissertation committee or a postdoc's principal investigator (PI) or someone from their hiring department who is closely familiar with their research. By submitting this application, you are waiving the right to view the faculty nomination submitted on your behalf.
The applicant is responsible for making sure that all the required documentation is submitted before the application deadline of Friday, December 20, 2024.
