International Travel for Graduate & Professional Students
Northwestern University supports the safety and preparedness of its graduate and professional students undertaking international travel for University-sponsored activities. Use this guide to access essential resources and promote a healthy and safe trip abroad.
Key Steps Before Traveling
1. Confirm Northwestern-sponsored International Travel
- Determine if your trip qualifies as Northwestern-sponsored international travel by reviewing the Graduate Student Travel Definition. Accurate classification ensures access to University support and resources.
2. Register Your Travel
- All Northwestern-sponsored travelers must log their international trip in the International Travel Registry (ITR) at least two weeks before departure. Follow the instructions for solo (independent) or group travel.
- Do not register domestic or personal travel, or travel to your home country.
- Why register? It provides critical health and safety information and allows the University to assist during emergencies abroad.
3. Confirm International Health Insurance Coverage
- As of January 1, 2025, all eligible international travelers on Northwestern-sponsored travel are automatically covered by the GeoBlue Student Blanket Plan.
- Eligibility for coverage: Registration in the International Travel Registry (ITR) is required. The plan does not cover travel to your home country.
4. Plan for High-Risk Destinations
- For U.S. Department of State Level 3 or 4 Travel Advisory destinations, consult an adviser to address potential risks.
- Some high-risk destinations may require disclosure to facilitate support during emergencies.
