Spring and Summer 2021 GESI Teaching Assistant Job Opening

The Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI) seeks 1 or 2 graduate student Teaching Assistants (TAs) for Spring and Summer 2021 (contingent upon enrollment). GESI has traditionally been a study abroad program that provides undergraduates with the knowledge, tools, and experiences to partner with communities to confront shared global challenges. The program pairs critical development/nonprofit studies with opportunities in collaborative experiential learning with small scale community/nonprofit organizations abroad.

Due to COVID-19, GESI is offering a virtual rendition of its programming in lieu of canceled study abroad programs. This is a unique hybrid opportunity to explore complex questions through coursework while simultaneously engaging in a meaningful internship—all in a completely online setting.

TAs will support faculty teaching the online course associated with the program, INTL_ST 393-0: Development in a Global Context.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Holding office hours for students
  • Weekly check-in with course instructors
  • Grading 2 short written assignments
  • Attend weekly Tuesday lectures and participate in in-lecture conversations and discussions
  • Facilitate and evaluate weekly Thursday class activities, including peer-review activities and simulation/role play activities
  • As an opportunity to develop pedagogical skills, TAs will have the option to give a guest lecture as part of the course (not required).
  • All teaching will be virtual: TAs do not need to be on campus.

Preferred (but not required) qualifications:

  • Background in development/nonprofit/NGO work, either professionally or through research
  • Background or coursework in critical development studies (nonprofits, NGOs, humanitarianism, etc.)

Applicants should send a brief letter of interest outlining teaching experience and professional/research commitments, along with a CV, to gesi@northwestern.edu.

Compensation: This TA role will be supplemental to your regular stipend. Permission from TGS and your home department is required before accepting and work begins. The position will pay $20/hour; 10-15 hours/week; up to 150 hours over the 10-week quarter ($3000 total, or $1000 monthly supplemental stipend).

Hiring timeline: Applications for spring TAs will be reviewed beginning February 15 and will be accepted until the position is filled. Graduate students from all schools and departments are welcome to apply. Applicants should include their preference of filling the role in spring or summer quarter.
