Miriam Petty Appointed TGS Associate Dean for Academic Programs

Dear Members of The Graduate School (TGS) Community,

miriam-insta.jpgI am pleased to announce that Miriam Petty has been appointed Associate Dean for Academic Programs at The Graduate School effective September 15, 2021.

Miriam is an associate professor in the Department of Radio/Television/Film in Northwestern’s School of Communication, and a former director of graduate studies for the Screen Cultures doctoral program. She serves as affiliate faculty in Performance Studies, African American Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies. Miriam writes and teaches about race, stardom, performance, reception, adaptation, and genre and is especially interested in the history of African American representation in Hollywood film.

Dr. Petty received her PhD from Emory University’s Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts. Before coming to Northwestern, she taught at Rutgers University and Princeton University.

As associate dean, Miriam will provide academic leadership for all doctoral, master’s, certificate, and cluster programs under the supervision of TGS. She will lead The Graduate School’s annual academic program review process, identify and cultivate programmatic and institutional opportunities, and represent the interests of TGS across units within the University. As a member of my senior leadership team, Miriam will facilitate clear communication and positive partnership between TGS and our graduate programs, university collaborators, students, and postdoctoral trainees.

I am delighted to welcome Miriam to The Graduate School and appreciate her exemplary record of teaching and mentoring, demonstrated academic leadership experience, and her strong commitment to our diverse community of scholars. I hope you will all join me in congratulating Miriam on her appointment as associate dean.

Sincerely,
Kelly
