Graduate Student Appreciation Week 2023
Graduate Student Appreciation Week (GSAW) 2023 is a nationally recognized celebration which will take place from Monday, April 3 – Friday, April 7, 2023 (with some bonus events on Saturday, April 8). It is a terrific opportunity to celebrate and recognize PhD and master's students in The Graduate School (TGS)! Below is a comprehensive list of GSAW events and giveaways that are free and open to all TGS students.
Note: Certain events are only accessible with the use of our Daily GSAW Access Pass. Events that require attendees to show their Daily GSAW Access Pass for admittance are indicated with an asterisk (*) below. All eligible TGS graduate students will receive a new daily pass in their Northwestern email inbox every day of GSAW with a list of applicable events and programming.

To celebrate GSAW 2023, TGS is giving away 75 $25 credit vouchers to the Norris University Bookstore in partnership with the Office of the Ombudsperson and the NU Interdepartmental Neuroscience (NUIN) program.

60-Minute Massage Giveaway Raffle
Presented by The Graduate School (TGS) and NU Recreation
In celebration of GSAW 2023, NU Recreation is giving away ten 60-minute massages in partnership with The Graduate School (TGS). Massage therapy is one of the most effective ways to combat stress and enhance wellness. Massage therapists will work with raffle winners to customize their experience and cater to their individual needs. Effective massage therapy techniques, such as Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sports, Hot Stone, Aromatherapy, and Reflexology may be employed.
Note: Sessions must be redeemed by May 31, 2023.

As we begin Spring Quarter, there are significant religious holidays for many Northwestern students who are observing various rituals and practices. Northwestern Religious & Spiritual Life invites all students to join us for a special interfaith gathering, "Meet at the Crossroads," on Sunday, April 2 at 6:30 PM in Parkes Hall 122.
We will reflect together on sacred texts and learn about opportunities to support one another through the quarter. We will participate in a community Iftar with our Muslim community as we journey together in Ramadan.

The goal of Writing Retreats is to provide regular opportunities throughout the quarter for graduate students to write together. During this three-hour retreat, writers work in the main room, keeping mics muted and/or cameras off and using the chat feature to share goals, ask and answer questions, and check in with each other. Retreats also feature two breakout rooms for conversation (“The Break Room”) and for collaboration (“The Workshop").
All graduate students are welcome to drop in at any point during Writing Retreats, but registration with Eventbrite is required for each.

Beyond Representation: Diversity in Prose and in Practice

"Beyond Representation: Diversity in Prose and in Practice" will allow students to reflect on the ways their lived experience has cultivated skills to relate with those different from themselves. Individuals’ identities are not the sum total of their relationships to the work of diversifying the academy nor their contributions to equitable and inclusive practices. Reflection on how we engage difference in classrooms and beyond forms the core topic of this workshop. Each participant will cultivate one or more anecdotes they can deploy in future applications and interviews that illustrate their approach to the creation of diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments.

Join Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) virtually for a 15-minute mindfulness and grounding session facilitated by clinicians Donzell Lampkins, LCSW and Chelsi Battle, MA. Each 15-minute session will offer a guided practice that helps participants focus on slowing down our bodies and brains by finding a calming energy! No prior experience is needed. All you need is your curiosity and openness!
Participating students are encouraged to be in a quiet/private space, free from other tasks and ready to be engaged (on or off video).
Three 15-minute sessions will be offered: 2:00 PM, 2:20 PM and 2:40 PM. Students are permitted to attend multiple sessions.

April is Inclusive Excellence Month, which began in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity surrounding us all. During April, The Graduate School encourages all to take time to recognize the diversity that drives inclusive excellence in their workplace, school, and home. By celebrating the unique cultures, backgrounds, and traditions of others, one can gain a greater appreciation for the diversity that surrounds us.

Norris Mini Course: One-Day Wheel Throwing Workshop

Want to dip your hands in a little clay? Come join Norris Mini Courses for a two-hour workshop where you will learn the fundamental steps of throwing.
Participants will get to throw as much as they can but will only choose one piece to keep. Participants will get to choose from 4 different glaze colors to match their perfect creation. Projects will be available for pick-up two weeks from the workshop's completion. No experience is required!
Spots are limited. Registration is required. Participants will receive a confirmation email after registration closes.

Experience Northwestern: Threepenny Opera at Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre

As part of the Experience Northwestern series and in celebration of GSAW 2023, The Graduate School will raffle off 20 pairs of tickets to see Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre's production of Threepenny Opera, a biting satire of the post-war rise of capitalism, wrapped up in Kurt Weill’s jazzy score, presenting the tale of Macheath, a debonair crime lord on the verge of turning his illegal empire into a legitimate business.
The deadline to enter the raffle is Sunday, April 2, at 11:59PM CDT. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 3.
