A Statement of Support for the TGS Community

We must remain steadfast in our core shared values, especially at a time that is so difficult for so many, in our community and the world.”

Kelly Mayo
Dean of The Graduate School and Associate Provost for Graduate Education

Dear members of the TGS community,

Many of you have reached out expressing outrage, disappointment, fear, and concern regarding the ongoing attacks and escalating tensions between Israel and Gaza.

While geo-political matters are complex and there are no easy solutions, atrocities must be acknowledged and acts of terror must be condemned. We condemn the horrific attack on Israel by Hamas. Speaking out against acts of violence directly aligns with our Northwestern priorities of building resiliency and a sense of belonging, defending free expression, and promoting engagement across differences. There is a history of violence between Israel and Palestine and our thoughts are with the many impacted by this terrible conflict. Our hopes are for a swift and more peaceful resolution.

I also want to acknowledge that there are other atrocities and acts of terror happening across the globe. Acknowledging one situation is not meant to downplay or distract from attention needed elsewhere. We must care about the life of any individual as part of our shared responsibilities to society. TGS graduate students and postdoctoral fellows hail from many countries around the world, and we strive to foster a sense of inclusion and appreciation for diverse cultures amongst all in our community.

Regardless of your personal feelings when it comes to the longstanding tensions in the Middle East, people are frightened and dying. My hope is that we will continue to lift up one another during such times of crisis. When there is hurt, suffering, and savagery, we must speak, act, and reach out to one another. Please exhibit patience, compassion, kindness, and concern.

We also appreciate that it may be challenging for some of you to concentrate on your studies and research at the moment. Please be sure to maintain an open dialogue with your instructors and advisers about your individual needs. We are here for you and can connect you with graduate student resources and faculty, staff, and postdoctoral resources to support your well-being.

We must remain steadfast in our core shared values, especially at a time that is so difficult for so many, in our community and the world.

Sincerely,
Kelly
