Apply to Become a One Book One Northwestern Graduate Assistant
Apply for a graduate assistant (GA) position with One Book One Northwestern for the 2024–25 academic year. One Book One Northwestern is a community-wide reading program hosted by the Office of the Provost. It aims to engage the campus in a common conversation centered on a carefully chosen, thought-provoking book. Throughout the year, events like lectures, films, and discussion groups provide an opportunity for individuals to gather and talk about the issues presented in the book.
Gain experience coordinating a wide range of events throughout the year and develop practical communication skills and graphic design. The GA will work with on- and off-campus partners to support One Book through events, programming, book discussions, marketing, and general office work. The GA will oversee distribution of the selected books during Summer quarter and also participate in the One Book Selection Committee during Winter quarter and will read five-to-six books and evaluate them for the following year's selection.
Responsibilities and Projects:
- Help plan, prepare for, and execute One Book events, including Steering Committee meetings and author keynote addresses.
- Oversee summer book distribution and track e-book distribution, open and download rates, and additional data collection.
- Help oversee student fellow projects and create materials for weekly fellow meetings.
- Ordering catering and setting up refreshments and gift bags for events.
- Handle video editing and event photography, which will be used in the end-of-year video.
- Create marketing materials including flyers, banners, and posters using Adobe and Microsoft tools, as well as nametags when necessary.
- Keep the One Book website updated with events, blog posts, and news stories about the selected book.
- Contribute to the One Book social media pages.
Skills and Requirements:
- Basic organization and communication skills.
- Familiar with video editing.
- Familiar with or willing to learn Mailchimp email distribution.
- Experience with Adobe and Microsoft tools, namely Excel.
This position requires 10-15 hours of work per week over the year from the Fall to Summer quarters at a rate of $23.50/hour.
The GA works both remotely and in the office at Locy Hall Room 112/113 (1850 Campus Drive), and must spend 50% of the time in the office. The exact schedule will be based on the GA's class or personal schedule, but must be flexible to accommodate One Book's needs around programming and assisting Director Nancy Cunniff.
Tasks will be evaluated based on meeting deadlines and maintaining accurate records and successful completion of tasks throughout the summer.
