The Northwestern Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) is a vibrant and dynamic organization dedicated to serving the interests and needs of Chinese students and scholars at Northwestern University. It provides a broad spectrum of academic, cultural, and social activities to foster a supportive community. Through events such as cultural nights, career development workshops, and various leisure activities, CSSA aims to enrich the university experience for its members.

  • Who all is eligible to join CSSA?

CSSA is open to not only all Chinese students and scholars, but also people interested in Chinese culture, regardless of their nationality or ethnic background. This inclusivity strengthens the bridge between cultures and promotes a diverse community environment.

  • How does one "join" CSSA?

You can "join" the organization by participating in any of our activities. Interested individuals can join the CSSA Wechat Group by sending their name, major, enrollment time, and WeChat ID through their Northwestern email to cssa@u.northwestern.edu. The CSSA team will then add them to the group, fostering a connected and engaged community.

  • What can new members expect from CSSA?

New members can expect a welcoming and inclusive community that offers a wide range of activities and events designed to promote cultural exchange, career development, and social interaction. These include campus runs, dances, job-sharing forums, tax-free shopping trips, coffee talks, and large cultural galas such as the Spring Festival Gala.

  • What is CSSA biggest annual event?

With over 90 cast and staff members and over 500 audiences, CSSA's Spring Festival Gala is without a doubt the biggest annual event organized throughout the entire year. Celebrating Chinese New Year with performances, food, and cultural exhibitions, we draw significant participation from the community.

  • What is one of your most popular events/activities?

Among the many popular events, the Voice of Northwestern singing contest and the Spring Festival Gala are particularly notable. These events draw significant participation from the community, offering a platform for showcasing talent and celebrating Chinese culture and traditions. The singing contest in particular provides students with an opportunity to display their vocal talents in a friendly and competitive environment, while the Spring Festival Gala is a grand celebration of the Chinese New Year, featuring performances, food, and cultural exhibitions that attract a wide audience from across the university.

  • What would you say is one of CSSA's biggest successes or achievements?

One of the biggest successes of the CSSA has been its ability to foster a tight-knit community among Chinese students and scholars at Northwestern, providing a home away from home. This has been achieved through comprehensive support in academic, professional, and social dimensions, significantly enhancing the Northwestern experience for Chinese students.

  • What impact do you think your organization has on the TGS community?

CSSA significantly enhances the TGS community by fostering cultural diversity and inclusion. Through events like the singing contest and the Spring Festival Gala, it not only allows Chinese students to celebrate their heritage but also invites the wider community to appreciate Chinese culture, promoting cross-cultural understanding. Additionally, by organizing academic and social activities, the CSSA encourages interactions among diverse groups, contributing to a vibrant campus environment where differences are celebrated, and mutual respect is cultivated. This inclusive approach enriches the Northwestern experience for everyone involved, demonstrating the value of diversity in creating a more connected and empathetic community.

CSSA is more than just an association; it's a family that supports its members through their journey at Northwestern, offering a sense of belonging, opportunities for personal and professional growth, and a platform to share and celebrate Chinese culture.
