Summer 2025 Teaching Assistant Position at the Global Engagement Studies Institute
The Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI) seeks one graduate student teaching assistant (TA) for Summer 2025 from June 15–August 20, 2025. GESI is a study abroad program that provides undergraduates with the knowledge, tools, and experiences to partner with communities to confront shared global challenges. The program pairs critical development/nonprofit studies with opportunities in collaborative experiential learning with small scale community/nonprofit organizations abroad.
GESI has three phases: Pre-Departure Seminar (June 15–18); internship in host country (June 20–August 17); and Final Reflection Summit (August 18-20). The TA must be available for in-person work during Pre-Departure Seminar on the Chicago campus and during Final Reflection Summit on the Evanston campus. While students are abroad, the TA will provide student support virtually. There is no international travel for instructors or TAs on this program.
The 3-unit course associated with this study abroad program is “Development in a Global Context” in International Studies (INTL_ST 393-SA).
Responsibilities will include:
- Holding virtual office hours for students
- Bi-weekly (every other week) check-in with course instructor on Zoom
- Grading 2 short written assignments
- Attend Pre-Departure Seminar and Final Reflection Summit
- Facilitate and evaluate class activities, including simulation/role play activities
- As an opportunity to develop pedagogical skills, TAs will have the option to give a guest lecture as part of Pre-Departure Seminar and/or Final Reflection Summit.
Preferred (but not required) qualifications:
- Background in development/nonprofit/NGO work, either via research or through professional experience
- Background or coursework in critical development, nonprofit/NGO studies, humanitarianism

Compensation: $3600. This TA role will be supplemental to your regular stipend. Permission from TGS and your home department is required before accepting and work begins.
