Why did you choose Northwestern?
Northwestern had a high overall rating for graduate studies and special strength in speech pathology, education, and counseling.
How would you describe your research and/or work to a non-academic audience? What was it then and/or what it is now?
I develop and run programs geared to students with special needs.
Tell us who or what inspired your research and/or work.
Gwen Arnold, one of my undergraduate professors at the University of Wisconsin, urged me to do graduate work. I had never considered the possibility before she mentioned it.
What are you most proud of in your career to date?
In 2002 the American Psychological Association gave me its Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Advancement of International Psychology.
Tell us about a current achievement or something you're working on that excites you.
I have just published a book, Understanding Suicide's Allure, with three co-authors. In it, we predicted a surge of suicides due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Unfortunately, our prediction came true.
What advice would you give your younger self or someone considering a similar path?
Project yourself ten years into the future to see if your field of study will still be current at that time.
