Wanted to return to the Chicago area.
How would you describe your research and/or work to a non-academic audience? What was it then and/or what it is now?
Computation methods applied to problems of interest for nuclear reactor design, licensing and optimization. Led the nuclear energy research and development program in the Obama Administration. Retired as senior manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Tell us who or what inspired your research and/or work.
Prof Elmer E. Lewis of Northwestern (retired) inspired me serving as my PhD advisor.
What are you most proud of in your career to date?
Serving as Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy in the first Obama Administration
Tell us about a current achievement or something you're working on that excites you.
In addition to my TAMU activities, I serve as Senior Technical Advisor at Kairos Power. This start up company is designing and developing a novel small modular nuclear reactor that will be inexpensive and ultra safe.
What advice would you give your younger self or someone considering a similar path?
As you consider various careers, pick what you love!
