Classics (Cluster and Certificate)

The Classics Cluster and Certificates offer a wide range of opportunities for students interested in Greek and Roman antiquity and/or its reception from medieval through contemporary times. Certificates are offered in Classical Latin, Ancient Greek, and Classical Studies.

Programs and events

We offer language training, group theatre and museum trips to Chicago, informal reading groups, for-credit seminars, occasional colloquia on Greek and Latin literature and history (including material culture and art), social events, and opportunities to discuss your work with leading scholars in the field.


Who should apply?

Doctoral candidates from any field are eligible to apply to join this intellectual “home” outside their department. Past participants have come from the following programs:

How to apply

Applicants to graduate studies at Northwestern interested in participating in this cluster should indicate their interest by completing a “Cluster Statement” when they apply to their respective graduate programs.

Cluster requirements

  • To affiliate with the Cluster, attendance at Cluster events is required. To complete the Cluster association, students must complete three courses pertaining to the study of Greco-Roman antiquity or its reception.

Certificate requirements

Interested students based in any Ph.D. program may elect to complete one or more of the three Graduate Certificates administered by the Classics Cluster and recognized on academic transcripts: the Graduate Certificate in Classical Latin, the Graduate Certificate in Ancient Greek, and the Graduate Certificate in Classical Reception Studies.  Each certificate requires the completion of five courses in Greek, Latin, Classics, or Classical Reception authorized for graduate credit. Courses offered in departments other than Classics that include a significant component in the study of Classical Antiquity or its reception are eligible.

 

Graduate Certificate in Classical Latin

  • The Graduate Certificate in Classical Latin, recognizes advanced philological training in Latin and requires five courses in total, no more than two of which can be in the student’s PhD department. At least two must be sections of LATIN 310-0 Readings in Latin Literature and/or LATIN 400-0 Medieval Latin.

Graduate Certificate in Ancient Greek

  • The Graduate Certificate in Ancient Greek recognizes advanced philological training in Greek and requires five courses in total, no more than two of which can be in the student’s PhD department. At least two must be sections of GREEK 301-0 Readings in Greek Literature.

Graduate Certificate in Classical Studies

  • The Graduate Certificate in Classical Studies recognizes advanced training on the relationship between ancient texts, artifacts, images, practices, or figures and their afterlife in later cultural contexts (literature, philosophy, pop culture, art, etc.) The Certificate requires five courses in total, one of which must be CLASSICS 400-0 Classics and Reception. No more than two can be from the student’s PhD department.
