Core Capacities
The Graduate School Core Capacities define areas of professional skill, knowledge, and experience required for success at Northwestern and in the wide range of fields Northwestern students and postdoctoral fellows pursue. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows develop these capacities through their research, teaching, leadership and community engagement activities, and through The-Graduate-School-supported professional development opportunities.
- Knowledge: These capacities—Research, Literacies, and Communication—enable graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to create knowledge.
- Engagement: These capacities—Teaching and Mentoring, Collaboration and Leadership—enable graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to engage communities within and beyond Northwestern.
- Strategy: These capacities—Career Development, Personal Effectiveness, and Organization/Management—empower graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to define goals and create strategies to meet them.
